Tom Cruise's Next Movie After Mission: Impossible 8 Sets Release Date (2025)

Although it doesn’t even have a title, Tom Cruise’s next film has a release date. The untitled Alejandro González Iñárritu-directed film, which stars Cruise, John Goodman, and Jesse Plemmons, will be released on Oct. 2, 2026, per Deadline. The film takes the place of The Batman: Part II, which was originally set to be released on that date.

The untitled film will be presented in traditional theaters and Imax and is currently the only major studio title set for wide release on that weekend. The film, produced by Legendary, also stars Sandra Hüller, Michael Sthulbarg, Sophie Wilde, and Riz Ahmed. It’s the story of the most powerful man in the world as he takes on a mission to prove that he is the savior of humanity before a disaster he is responsible for destroys everything.

The movie marks Cruise’s next film that's gotten an official release date after Mission: Impossible -The Final Reckoning, in which Cruise will star as Ethan Hunt. It marks the eighth installment of the franchise, which Cruise has starred in since 1996. The Final Reckoning is set for a May 23, 2025, release and is the follow-up to 2023’s Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One.

Mission: Impossible Update

Paramount Pictures, the studio behind the Mission: Impossible franchise, released a featurette and a set photo from production. The behind-the-scenes video shows fans a major stunt included in the movie, which is a sequence filmed underwater. The photo shows some of the high-level training that Cruise had to endure to prepare for the scene. “The training and preparation we put into this film is a culmination of all before it,” Cruise said on his X account. “From the depths, to the skies, I can’t wait to share more with you,” he wrote.

The new Mission: Impossible film will feature returning cast members Hayley Atwell as Grace, Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, Vanessa Kirby as Alanna, and Esai Morales as Gabriel. The film will also have the addition of actors Holt McClanny, Janet McTeer, Nick Offerman (The Last of Us), and Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso) The film is directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who also co-wrote the script with Erik Jendresen.

Cruise to Star in World War II Film

Cruise will reunite with McQuarrie for a World War II epic called Broadsword, which will be released in July 2025. The project was first announced in July 2024. Broadsword is the ninth overall collaboration between Cruise and McQuarrie.

Broadsword is set during the peak of World War II and is the story of an S.O.E. operation. In it, a Marine sergeant is the sole survivor after his plane crashes in France. He then teams up with a young girl, and together, they navigate treacherous terrain to try to reunite with their team. Broadsword is listed as being in pre-production on IMDb, and Henry Cavill and Marion Cotillard are listed as being in the film's cast.

Broadsword hits theaters in July 2025, while Mission: Impossible The Final Reckoning is in theaters on May 23, 2025. Cruise’s untitled Iñárritu film hits theaters on Oct. 6, 2026.
